a pinch of salt

Morocco reforms to cut monarch’s powers – Africa – Al Jazeera English.

Read the above link but be weary.   With the referendum vote just over a week away, swaying peoples minds is now more important than ever, and this will be sought at any level. Including bribing people to wait in taxis with flags for a “spur-of-the-moment” display of patriotism. Including mobilizing residents of quartiers populaires to be hostile towards peaceful pro-democracy movements. Including planting people in the pro-democracy movements to burn Israeli flags to undermine the movement. When every major newspaper runs a headline “reasons to vote yes” and when the king himself is broadcast saying that he will vote yes because voting yes contributes to Moroccan solidarity, well that doesn’t leave much space for democratic debate, now does it? For a foreigner I’m a prude political critic, but these cosmetic changes aren’t even enough to cover the bruises my friends collect for holding an opinion.
